Five Clauses to Check in a YouTube Network Contract

Revenue share, term, exit notice, channel ownership and payout timing: the five clauses to read before you sign with any YouTube network.

1. Revenue share

The contract needs to spell out the exact percentage you receive and the base it is calculated on. Check whether the share changes by revenue type and whether any fees come off before the split.

2. Term and renewal

See how long the agreement lasts and whether it renews on its own. Automatic renewal is normal; the key point is that you can stop it with reasonable notice.

3. Leaving the network

Find the notice period and the steps needed to end the agreement. Check what happens to revenue earned before you exit and when the channel is released from the CMS.

4. Who owns the channel

The channel and your videos must remain yours. Watch out for clauses that hand the network more rights over your content than it needs to monetize and protect it.

5. When you get paid

The contract or the network's terms should state when you are paid, through which methods and in which currency. Ask how you can see the figures behind every payout.

Read the full contract before signing and put your questions in writing. A network that stands behind its terms will answer them plainly.
